What is necessary to achieve AI Sovereignty? Some argue it is a state-trained LLM, others – presence of local infrastructure. Having a degree in Physics, I believe AI is built on power: nuclear power.
Here is the cold, hard math.
Data centers demand constant power, driving reliance on energy companies. Society wants power to be clean. Gas, coal, wind or solar energy – are either expensive, or challenging to produce 24x7x365, and just not enough for continuous supply of gigawatt-scale.
Who understands?
💡 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗮 (𝟯𝟴!), 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮 (𝟴) 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗮 (𝟳) dominate the nuclear energy landscape, driving the vast majority of the ~80 nuclear reactors currently under construction worldwide.
❓ 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲? The continent is standing still. Hungary, Slovakia and the UK are adding new reactors, but with combined output of 6GWe those only cover immediate needs.
🫱🏻🫲🏼 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝘁𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱? While the Senate voted to lift the 15-year ban on new nuclear builds, country still remains committed to a gradual nuclear phaseout, approved in 2017.
We have 3 nuclear power plants producing ~30% of total energy. A decision to build a new one would require a referendum, CHF 15-25B investments, and 10-15 years: zero chance for new nuclear power plants before 2050.
